Catch Report

This page hopefully answers some of the questions you might have as an angler: What are Little Blackhall and Inchmarlo Fishing's catch statistics? How do these compare to the river

wide catch? Why are our catch statistics getting better?  To enlarge the table and plots, click on them to expand them.

The 2024 season started badly at Little Blackhall and Inchmarlo as it did for the whole middle and lower river with only one fish by the start of June. We rallied with a very strong grilse run in the summer and ended up well above our five year average. Our sea trout catch has continued to be strong as it has for the last three years. Sea trout fishing on the beat in late summer, early autumn has become very exciting.

The 2024 catch has stabilised the 5 year average around the 130 mark, this appears to be the natural catch for the beat in the current environment. We hope to retain this stability as we have for the last 5 or 6 years in light of fluctuating river wide stocks. The sea trout return continues to excite and our long term averages are now higher than they have ever been. A quarter of all sea trout caught in 2024 were 3lb or above and we even had some over 4lb.

So what happened in spring and early summer 2024? We went from one of the best beats in Scotland in the spring of 2023 to not seeing a fish until April and then only one until June. The whole lower and middle Dee had a blank in spring, some think as a response to the mild winter there was no thermal barrier to fish migrating on up to the upper reaches early in the season. Others cite seal incursions. The season was turned with a July of epic proportions, the best day we caught 11 fish with one guest catching 7 themsleves, that same week we landed 23 fish.

What continues is Little Blackhall and Inchmarlo Fishing's strong whole river catch percentage. Between 1999 and 2016 we fluctuated between 1.5 to 3% of total river catch. This has changed markedly over the last 7 years. Our percentage catch has gone up year on year, with a blip in 2020 to nearly 5% in 2022. In 2023 we bettered even that with just a smidge under 7% of the entire river catch as reported on fishpal. This has fallen back to just under 6% in 2024. We believe this increase is a combination of the skill of our Ghillies, the season permanent extension in 2012 and our good rod numbers. The latter is a direct result of our competitive pricing and efforts to open salmon fishing to more and more anglers.
